Press Release – ENGO react to PM Zonqor Campus Comments – 24.11.2017

The undersigned coalition of eNGOs notes the prudent statements made by the Prime Minister to the effect that the American University of Malta will not be building its Zonqor Campus until the Bormla Campus is operating at full capacity.

The eNGOs are however concerned that since Sadeen Education Investments Limited is a private firm, it is free to disregard the commitments made by the Prime Minister.

The eNGOs are disappointed that the Prime Minister has not committed to leaving Zonqor Point in its natural state and that plans for the Zonqor Campus are in the meantime still being processed by the Planning Authority under the number PA 04746/17.

In the opinion of the eNGOs, the construction of the Zonqor Point campus should be called off completely and the land should be reinstated as part of the Inwadar National Park. In this manner the people of the surrounding localities will be able to enjoy this open space as originally envisaged.

In light of the considerable negative environmental impact of the project the eNGOs also wish to state that they remain committed in their opposition to the Zonqor Point campus and that they will be challenging the project through the planning process at the appropriate time.

The Press Release is signed by Flimkien Għal Ambjent Aħjar, the Ramblers’ Association of Malta, Front Ħarsien ODZ, Friends of the Earth Malta and Nature Trust Malta.

Stqarrija Stampa – Reazzjoni tal-Għaqdiet Ambjentali dwar il-kummenti tal-PM fuq Żonqor Point – 24.22.2017

Il-koalizzjoni ta’ għaqdiet ambjentali iffirmata hawn taħt tinnota l-istqarrija prudenti tal-Prim Ministru dwar il-fatt li l-Universita’ Amerikana ta’ Malta mhux sejra tkun qegħda tibda l-bini tal-kampus taż-Żonqor sakemm il-kampus ta’ Bormla ikun qiegħed jopera b’kapaċita’ sħiħa.

Iżda l-għaqdiet ambjentali huma inkwetati li peress li Sadeen Education Investments Limited hija kumpanija privata, din hija ħielsa li ma’ tagħtix widen lil dak li intqal mill-Prim Ministru.

L-għaqdiet ambjentali huma iddiżappuntati li l-Prim Ministru ma kkommettiex ruħu li jħalli is-sit fiż-Żonqor fl-istat naturali tiegħu u li sa dan it-tant il-pjanijiet tal-kampus taż-Żonqor qegħdin jiġu proċessati mill-Awtorita’ tal-Ippjanar taħt in-numru PA 04746/17.

Fil-fehma tal-għaqdiet ambjentali, il-bini tal-kampus ta’ Żonqor Point m’għandux iseħħ u l-art li kien sejjer isir il-proġett fuqha għandha tingħata lura lill-Park Nazzjonali tal-Inwadar. B’dan il-mod in-nies tal-lokalitajiet biswit Żonqor Point ikunu jistgħu igawdu dan l-ispazju miftuħ ħekk kif kien maħsub fil-Pjan Lokali.

Fid-dawl tal-impatt ambjentali negattiv li sejjer iħalli dan il-proġett, l-għaqdiet ambjentali jixtiequ jistqarru li huma kommessi li jibqgħu jopponu dan il-proġett fil-proċess tal-ippjanar.

Din l-istqarrija hija iffirmata minn Flimkien Għal Ambjent Aħjar, Ramblers’ Association of Malta, Front Ħarsien ODZ, Friends of the Earth Malta u Nature Trust Malta.
