Spring Walks Calendar – 2018

Wednesday 4th: St Thomas Bay/Tal-Munxar (Scenic) 

We will follow the coast up to Tal-Munxar, From St Paul’s Battery, there is a maze of tiny lanes between fields, then a secondary road linking us with more lanes, eventually bringing us out by Torri Mamo. It will be an easy walk with some steep inclines.
Duration:           3 hours (Approx.)
Rating:               Easy to moderate 
Meeting Place:  St. Thomas Bay car park, Marsascala

Sunday 8th: Chadwick Lakes/Nadur Tower (Scenic) 
Walking though Chadwick Lakes with a steep climb up to Nadur Tower returning through Ghemmieri lanes and passing villa Gomerino. Some steep inclines and rough ground. 
Duration:           3 to 4 hours
Rating:               Moderate to Hard (with steep inclines/rough ground/slippery, if wet) 
Meeting Place: Busugrilla (old roundabout), on the road down from Roman Villa, Rabat. Plenty of parking space near the children’s playing field. The old Busugrilla roundabout has been replaced by a modern visitors’ centre (Malta’s Water System)

Sunday 15th: Victoria Lines Trail: Gharghur/Madliena (Scenic)
From our starting point we go down till we reach Dies Valley passing the Busietta Bridge. When we reach Madliena, we will make a short visit to the Ditch of Madliena Fort. Then we will descend and cross Coal Valley by the Victoria Lines till we reach a lovely view point at what is known as ‘The Top of the World’.  We then proceed to San Brincat Valley and after a short break, we cross Anglu Valley by the Victoria lines. After passing by a quarry, we eventually return to our starting point.
Duration:           3 to 4 hours
Rating:              Moderate with some rough terrain and inclines along the valleys.

Wednesday 18th: Hugging the coast: Msida/Ta’ Xbiex/Gzira/Siema/St. Julian’s/Pembroke/Bahar ic-Caghaq. (Non-circular)
Starting from Msida following the popular coast until we reach Bahar ic-Caghaq where buses are quite frequent to take us back to wherever one wants to stop.
Duration:      about 3 hours
Rating:              Easy
Meeting Place:  Msida Parish Church

Sunday 22nd: Ghar Lapsi / Ghar Niffied
Starting from Ghar Lapsi, we will go along the coast towards Zurrieq, dropping down to sea level in a cove to go and explore Ghar Niffied. Then we will climb up to the Congreve Monument and return to Ghar Lapsi via the quarry and the water pipe connection.
This trek is on rough uneven ground and walkers must have a good head for heights as some areas are along cliff tops! Please note that it is marked as Hard.
Duration:      about 4 hours
Rating:              Hard with some rough terrain and slippery inclines. In certain places, you need a good head for heights as we may walk near cliff edges.

Saturday 28th: Gozo

This Gozo walk will start off from the ferry at Mgarr, going through the village of Ghajnsielem, then skirting Nadur, Xaghra, Victoria and Xewkija back to the ferry. This will be a circular walk – no transport involved – of around four hours. 
Duration:           4 hours (Approx.)
Rating:               Moderate 
Meeting Place:  Outside the ferry terminal in Mgarr, Gozo. 
Time:                 09:00 (Take the 08:15 ferry from Cirkewwa) 
Please note that this is a Saturday walk.

Sunday 6th: Bahrija Cliffs (Scenic) 

Walking along the coast past the Bronze Age village (caves cut into the cliff face), returning using inland paths. There will be some steep inclines.
Duration:           3 to 4 hours  
Rating:              Moderate (with steep inclines & rough terrain)
Meeting Place:  Bahrija Square – in front of the playground

Wednesday 9th: Victoria Lines Trail: Mosta / Dwejra countryside (Scenic)
From in front of Mosta Lidl, we cross over to the Victoria Lines leading to Gnien l- Gharusa tal- Mosta. At San Guzepp tat-Targa, we follow the Victoria Lines till we hit the Mgarr Road. Following country lanes we go up to Itria Chapel and follow the Dwejra Lines back to the starting point.
Duration : about 3 hours
Rating    :   Easy
Meeting Place: Mosta Lidl   (Bus 250: Stage: M’Cast)
Time : 16:00 Please note change of start time!


Sunday 13th: Victoria Lines Trail: Mgarr/Kuncizzjoni/Bingemma (Scenic)
A circular walk starting and ending in Mgarr following part of the Victoria Lines Trail. From Mgarr Parish Church, we walk past Castello Zammitello and head through the hamlets of L-Iskorvit and Ta’ L-Abatija until we reach the cliffs over Fomm ir-Rih Bay from where the Victoria Lines are clearly visible. We follow an uphill path which leads to Kuncizzjoni Battery from where we keep following the Victoria Lines through is-Santi, Bingemma Fort, Nigret Tower, finally reaching Bingemma Gap. From here we follow quiet country roads through agricultural fields until we reach the village of Mgarr.  
Duration:           4 hours (Approx.) Approx distance 12km
Rating:               Moderate to hard (rough and uneven terrain with 1 steep incline)

Wednesday 16th: The 3 Valleys: Wied ic-Cawsli/Wied Hanzir/Wied Qirda
We start from Qormi heading onto Wied ic Cawsli, Ghar Hanzir then Wied Qirda onto Wied is Sewda passing by a couple of chapels on the way  before we end our walk at the start point in Qormi.
Duration:     about 3 hours
Rating:         Easy      
Meeting Place:  On road by Park&Ride and Lidle Qormi

Sunday 20th: Guided visit to the University Botanical Collection
A opportunity for the Ramblers to visit the Botanical Collections of the University of Malta at the Argotti Gardens. The leading authority of the botanical faculty will be explaining the special species grown and preserved there and give us other information about the exotic plants at the time of spring when the plants are at their best. A fee of 5 euros will be payable by the participants whose numbers will be restricted on a first-come first-served basis. Booking opens on 6th May and last calls will be received by 16th May. Sunday 27th: Mosta Valley and its surrounding countryside
Starting from Mosta Dome Square, we head towards Wied il-Għasel, through which we head towards  Burmarrad, on to Bidnija. There are about four Chapels on this route.
Duration:           3 to 4 hours
Rating:               Moderate

Sunday 3rd: Around the Valletta fortifications (Scenic/Historical)
Duration:          about 3 hours  
Rating:              Easy  
Meeting Place:  At the entrance of Valletta, in front of the Parliament building.
Time:                 08:30 (Please note the change in start time)


Wednesday 6th: Mosta / Victoria Lines / Ghajn Rihana / Mgarr.
From in front of Mosta Lidl, we cross over to the Victoria Lines leading to Gnien il- Gharusa tal- Mosta. Following the Victoria Lines we cross the Ghajn Rihana valley till we reach Zebbiegh (Mgarr). From the chapel, we track back to the starting point through Bidnija.
Duration: 3 hours
Rating: Easy
Meeting Place: Mosta Lidl ( Bus 250 / Bus stop M’Cast.)
Time: 16:00


Sunday 10th: Victoria Lines Trail: Along the Victoria Lines
We will walk along the Victoria Lines in Gnien l-Gharusa tal-Mosta and then follow a path which runs along the perimeter of Fort Mosta where we will come across a cave which was used as a catacomb during the Paleo-Christian period. We will then walk down to Wied il-Ghasel and retrace our steps to Gnien l-Gharusa tal-Mosta.
We are trying to arrange a visit to Fort Mosta – updates will be sent in due course.
Duration:           Walking time is short. Fort Msta visit lengthens duration of the walk.
Rating:               Moderate to hard with rough terrain
Meeting Place:  Targa Gap, road to Gnien l-Gharusa tal-Mosta.( Bus-stop Gharusa)

Sunday 17th: Verdala Palace / Bishops’ Palace / Wied tal-Isqof / Tal Virtu / Verdala
We start in front of the main gate of Verdala Palace on the road leading to Buskett where we then head to the dilapidated Palazz tal-Isqof, before we follow the track down the Wied tal-Isqof then follow the road towards Tal-Virtu Rabat heading back towards our meeting place Verdala Palace.
Duration:         3 hours approximately
Rating:             Easy

Wednesday 20th: Rabat / Wied il-Qlejgha / Nadur Tower /Fiddien
From the Roman Villa at Rabat Square, we cross over to Wied il- Qlejgha. Pushing northwards we walk towards Nadur Tower, Ghemieri, Bingemma, Palazzo Gomerino, Fiddien and back to the starting point.
Duration: 3 hours
Rating:        Easy
Meeting Place: Roman Villa – Rabat. Time 16.00 hrs

Sunday 24th: Visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Mdina (Cultural)
A guided cultural visit to the Mdina Cathedral with its magnificent Aula Capitularis and its Metropolitan Museum. The group will meet at the main entrance gate to Mdina and walk towards the cathedral where Mons Alwig Deguara will first guide us through the exhibits of the Museum and then through the Cathedral after the religious services there have ended.

This being our last walk before our summer break, we would like to celebrate the end of a full walking season by having a meal together at a venue in Rabat / Mdina to be announced at a date closer to the walk.
