Spring Walks Calendar


Sunday 7th: Naxxar – Mosta – Bidnija – Naxxar

From our starting point we cross the street and walk by the Naxxar Curt Ruts,  we go down by the Quarry, and after passing the Chapel of St. Catherine we walk for about 20 minutes by the beautiful  fields of Mosta and Burmarrad. When we arrive by the Main Road of Burmarrad, we proceed to a hill leading to Bidnija. At the top of the hill, we turn right and proceed to our starting point from a  different route enjoying some truly lovely countryside and breathtaking views of Qawra and Salini,

Duration: 3 to 4 hours
Rating: Moderate

Wednesday 10th: Cultural visit to the Tunnara Museum followed by walk

A cultural visit to the Tunnara Museum with explanations about the tuna fishing that used to be practised by fishermen in Mellieħa Bay, followed by a scenic walk that will take on the Marfa ridge from L-Aħrax and Il-Qammieħ.

Duration: 3 to 4 hrs including visit.
Rating: Easy to Moderate

Sunday 14th: Cold War Bunker visit and walk along part of Victoria Lines

We will walk through Burmarrad, Wied ta’ Għajn Mula, Bidnija, Dwejra, Falka Gap back to Mosta starting point.

Saturday 20th: Gozo – Mystery Walk

Duration: about 4 hrs
Rating: Moderate (with some rough terrain)
Meeting Point: Just outside Mġarr Terminal (Gozo)
Starting Time: 10:15 (Take the 9:45 ferry from Ċirkewwa)

Note: This is a Saturday walk!

Wednesday 24th: Along the paths through the Siġġiewi countryside

This will be a repeat of the walk we had to abandon when we were caught out in heavy rain.

Duration: about 4 hours

Sunday 28th: Chadwick Lakes / Binġemma Fort

Walking through Chadwick Lanes and part of the Victoria lines to reach Binġemma Fort. There will be rough terrain and steep inclines

Duration: 3 to 4 hours
Rating: Mod. to hard with rough terrain and inclines
Meeting Point: Busugrilla roundabout, Rabat (Għajn – Water Conservation Awareness Centre)

Sunday 5th: Valleys and more

We will walk through the two valleys of Qormi, up Wied is-Sewda and Inċita, to Tal-Ħlas, crossing over to Wied Qirda and then going down Wied il-Kbir beneath Tal-Ħandaq and near Qatar tal-Ingliża and Wied ic-Ċawsli.

Duration: about 3 to 4 hours
Rating: Moderate
Meeting Point: Park and Ride, Marsa. We will be meeting just across the entrance to Lidl. Starting Time: 09:00

Sunday 12th: Mother’s Day. No scheduled walk.

Wednesday 15th: A walk along Dingli Cliffs and inland valleys

From the restaurant called Bobbyland, we will hug part of Dingli Cliffs, then head inland towards Wied Ħazrun which we will cross, going on to Wied ir-Rum and then on to Mtaħleb. We will be returning to our starting point along scenic country lanes.

Sunday 19th: A panoramic walk from Baħrija towards Għajn Tuffieħa Bay, Ġnejna, Fomm ir-Riħ and Kunċizzjoni.

We set off downhill by means of Triq is-Sajf ta’ San Martin which goes through Baħrija Valley, heading towards Fomm ir-Riħ Bay; the road becomes a path as we go all the way round the Bay. Further on, we reach the Ras il-Pellegrin plateau from where we can enjoy a bird’s eye view of Ġnejna Bay and a panoramic view of Ras il-Karraba promontory and Għajn Tuffieħa Bay. Then we make our way down the cliff path to Ġnejna beach for a break before we start heading back.

We set off uphill this time, not up the main road but through a country road known to Mġarr farmers. This will lead us to the Fomm ir-Riħ area for the second time today, as we continue on up a steep stoney path which goes by the tail end of the Victoria Lines, built by the British in the late 19th century along the great geological fault that stretches from here to Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq, a distance of about 12 kilometres. We reach il-Kunċizzjoni area, named after the the local chapel dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Our Lady. Finally we enter Baħrija Village via the back of the parish church.

Sunday 26th: Trekking in the South

We meet near Al Fresco restaurant just as you enter Birzebbuġia. We will go up to Borġ in-Nadur, round to the valley near tal-Papa area, down to Ħal-Far and on to Għar Ħasan where we can also explore two more lesser known caves, then on to il-Fortizza ta’ Delimara, Kalafrana and back.

Wednesday 29th: Marsaxlokk and Birzebbuġia

Hugging the coast to B’Buġia and back using secondary roads and paths.

Duration: 3 to 4 hrs
Rating: Easy
Meeting Place: M’Xlokk Parish church
Starting Time: 14:00


Sunday 2nd: Birgu / Kalkara

Walking through Vittoriosa & Kalkara mainly along the coast to reach Wied Għammieq cemetery.

Duration: 3 to 4 hours
Rating: Easy
Meeting Point: Car park close to Senglea (Isla) Main Gate
Starting Time: 08:30 – Note the change in starting time!

Sunday 9th : San Gwann / Swieqi / Wied Għomor

From San Ġwann centre, we head towards the prehistoric cart ruts within the same village, passing by the ancient chapel of Santa Magdalena from where we then proceed to Wied Għomor, then on to the fairly new village of Swieqi and on to San Ġiljan. We then wind our way back to our starting point.

Rating: Easy to Moderate

Wednesday 12th: Marsaskala/Żonqor

Walking up to Żonqor point, then along the coast.

Duration: about 3 hours
Rating: Moderate (some rough ground)
Meeting Point: Marsaskala Parish Church
Starting Time: 16:00

Saturday 15th: Zebbuġ – Tal-Virtu – Knisja ta’ San Blas – Siġġiewi – Żebbuġ (Scenic with varied views)

A long walk through open countryside, some steep uphill and downhill stretches and valleys. We pass Tal-Virtu, Knisja ta’ San Blas and continue meandering along country lanes through the foothills below Buskett and Laferla Cross.  We skirt Siġġiewi Centre and return to Żebbuġ.

Duration: about 4 hours
Rating: Moderate with some steep inclines
Meeting Point: ex- Peridot Hall, Żebbuġ (bus stop Qirda on line 62 to Siggiewi)
Starting Time: 07:00 – Note change to earlier start time.

Also note that this is a Saturday walk.

Sunday 23rd: Trekking along clay slopes overlooking lovely sea views

Starting from the parking area at Għajn Tuffieħa (the bay with the steps down to the sea), we will descend to sea level, and trek round the plateau of il-Qarraba. Then we will go on towards Ġnejna, go round the bay and further on, returning to starting point. Bring your swimsuit. You might feel like a swim after the walk.

Duration: about 4 hours
Rating: Hard (can be slippery if wet ground. NOT for people who have no head for heights. Some rough ground with some scrambling). Please be warned.
Meeting Point: Parking place at Għajn Tuffieħa, near the old Riviera Martinique (now in a derelict state).
Starting Time: 07:00 – Note change to earlier start time.

Sunday 30th: Walk and cultural visit to St. Angelo and Maritime Museum followed by lunch

We will be having a short walk followed by a guided visit to the restored St. Angelo Fort and the Maritime Museum followed by lunch a a nearby restaurant.

More details will be sent out closer to the date.
