Winter Walks Calendar

January

Sunday 5th: Mtarfa area

We will be visiting the Medieval chapel of San Mikiel Is-Sanċir, a Roman (small) underground water system, Chadwick lakes, the Mtarfa area, an underground Hospital used during WWll and the extension of the underground Hospital during the Cold War (subject to permission).

Meeting point: Għajn National Water Conservation Center, Rabat (outskirts of Rabat, on road leading from Roman Villa to il-Fiddien)

Meeting time: 09:00 

Duration: 3 to 4 hrs

Rating: Moderate (Not recommended if you suffer from claustrophobia). Torch recommended.


Wednesday 8th: Siġġiewi – LaFerla Cross – Gebel Ciantar – Tal Providenza – Siġġiewi (scenic and historic)

After the steep uphill stretch we will cross a rough stretch of garigue with sharp rocky outcrops and cart ruts, with a man made rock cut pit in the middle unknown to most of us. After descending we will pass the Tal-Providenza Chapel and return to Siġġiewi. 

Meeting point: Siġġiewi Parish Church

Meeting time: 14:00 

Duration: 2 to 3hrs

Rating: Easy to Moderate (hard on the garigue)


Sunday 12th:  Along the Cottonera Bastions

We will be visiting the Foss and its olive grove. Then we will move on along the Cottonera Lines to the Capuchin Friary, Rinella and Kalkara, and finish off at Żabbar Gate again.

Meeting point: Żabbar Gate (Notre Dame Gate) near St. Edwards College

Meeting time: 09:00

Duration: around two and a half hours

Rating: Easy


Sunday 19th: Tarġa Battery / Dwejra Lines / Falka Gap Lines

We will be visiting il-Wied ta’ Għajn Riħana, Tat-Tarġa Battery, Wied ta’ Għajn Mula, Dwejra Lines, and the Falka Gap Lines.

Meeting point: Ġnien l-Għarusa tal-Mosta

Meeting time: 09:00

Duration: 3 to 4 hours

Rating: Moderate


Wednesday 22nd: Tas–Salib / Nadur Tower / Binġemma Fort / Tas-Salib (scenic and historic)

From Tas-Salib we cross a stretch of garrigue, passing along some lesser known but impressive cart ruts on our way to Nadur Tower and Binġemma Fort. We continue along part of the Victoria Lines, skirt Għemieri Estate and Palace to head back to Tas-Salib. 

Meeting point: Tas-Salib (this hamlet is on the road from Rabat to Binġemma Gap)

Driving directions: Coming from from Rabat, head in the direction of Baħrija. Outside the Rabat built up area turn right at the road signs “Tas-Salib and Ta’ Koronja”. Follow the Tas-Salib road sign. About 1km after crossing Wied Il-Fiddien, there is Tas-Salib, which starts with a big blank party wall in sand colour. At the start of the hamlet is the bus stop Rabat “Salib” from line 109. (Note that this bus stop is on the way back from Baħrija to Rabat!)

Saturday 25th:  M’Xlokk /Birzebbugia  (Scenic)

We will be walking along the coast to B’Buġia, then up to Borġ in-Nadur and down into Wied Ħas-Saptan. We will be using secondary roads and winding lanes to get back to our starting point.

Meeting point: Marsaxlokk Parish Church

Meeting time: 09:00

Duration: 3 to 4 hours

Rating: Moderate with some rough terrain

February

Saturday 1st:  Gozo

We will be meeting up and starting our walk at Mġarr Ferry Terminal in Gozo at 9:00. It will be a circular walk.

Meeting point: Gozo, Mġarr Terminal

Meeting time: 09:00

Duration: 3 to 4 hours

Rating: Easy to Moderate  

NOTE: This walk is on a Saturday!   


Wednesday 5th:  Cultural walk around the town of Qormi. 

We will be walking through the village core and getting information about the Parish Churches of St. Sebastian and St. George and the chapels of St. Sebastian, Victory, St. Catherine, St. Peter, St. Mary and St. Francis. We will also be having a good look at various houses of character and niches.

Meeting point: behind St. Sebastian Church, Qormi

Meeting time: 14:00

Duration: two and a half hours

Rating: Easy


Sunday 9th:   A circular walk on the outskirts of Mosta 

We will be starting from San Ġuzepp tat-Tarġa and will be walking along the Victoria Lines and on to Bingemma before turning back to Mosta.

Meeting point: San Ġuzepp tat Targa, (next to Ġnien Għarusa tal-Mosta

Meeting time: 09:00

Duration: 3 to 4 hours

Rating: Moderate to hard 


Sunday 16th:   Zebbiegh, Bidnija, Mosta, Dwejra, Bingemma

From our starting point we proceed to the Valley of Bidnija till we reach Tarġa Gap in Mosta. We will then turn right and start walking in a circular route by the Victoria Lines of Mosta, Dwejra and Binġemma. After a break by the chapel we go down the direction of Mġarr and back to our starting point through rural areas.

Meeting point: Żebbiegħ Church

Meeting time: 09:00

Duration: 3 to 4 hours

Rating: Moderate with a sharp incline from Mosta to Dwejra 


Wednesday 19th:  Marsaxlokk / St Peter’s Pool

Walking to St. Peters pool and along the coast, then heading inland passing Our Lady of Tas-Silġ Church.

Meeting point: Hunter’s Tower Restaurant, Marsaxlokk

Meeting time: 14:00

Duration: around 3 hours

Rating: Moderate to hard with some rough ground


Sunday 23rd: Buskett and surrounding area (scenic)

We will be walking through Buskett gardens, then visit Għar il-Kbir, then head towards the coast and back through country lanes. 

Meeting point: Buskett Gardens covered car park, Dingli.

Meeting time: 09:00

Duration: around 3 to 4 hours

Rating: Moderate with some steep inclines which could be slippery if wet

March

Sunday 1st:  Delli – Majjiesa  (scenic) 

This walk consists in a rough ramble on the wild boulder scree beneath Xagħra l-Ħamra.  This is a very difficult “walk” and only suitable for very experienced ramblers who can trek over boulders easily without getting hurt.   

Meeting point: Apple’s Eye Cafeteria, Bajja tal-Mixquqa (Golden Bay)

Duration: around 3 hours

Rating: Hard : Very difficult due to the rough terrain. Please read the above warning.


Wednesday 4th:  Cultural walk in and around the village of Siġġiewi

This is an easy walk going through the village of Siġġiewi visiting interesting sights within the old village. If time permits we will also visit some of the surrounding countryside.

Meeting point: Limestone Heritage (Siġġiewi By-Pass)

Meeting time: 14:00

Duration: around 3 hours

Rating: Easy


Sunday 8th:  Marsaskala / Munxar / St. Peter’s Pool

Starting from the village of Marsaskala, we follow the coast towards St. Thomas Bay and il-Munxar cliffs till we get to St. Peter’s Pool and then back to Marsaskala.

Meeting point: Marsaskala Parish Church

Meeting time: 09:00

Duration: around 3 to 4 hours

Rating: Easy to Moderate some rough terrain


Sunday 15th: Selmun Palace/ Mġiebaħ Bay / Fort Campbell / Mistra Bay / Xemxija (Coastal and country)

From Selmun Palace we walk through Mġiebaħ past some old beehives, then down along the coast towards Mġiebaħ Bay. We continue along the coast, then up towards Fort Campbell, down towards St. Paul’s Islands and Mistra Bay. From there we go up towards the fire station at Xemxija. We cross the road to the Roman Baths, and the Roman road. We turn right and go across Mistra Valley and back up to Selmun Palace.

Meeting point: Selmun Palace

Duration: around 3 to 4 hours

Rating: Moderate to hard with some rough terrain and steep inclines


Wednesday 18th: St. Thomas Bay / Tal-Munxar (scenic)

We will follow the coast up to Tal-Munxar. From St. Paul’s Battery, there is a maze of narrow lanes between fields, then a secondary road linking us with more lanes, eventually bringing us out by Torri Mamo. It will be an easy walk with some steep inclines.

Sunday 22nd:  Qormi Valleys

We will be walking through Wied il-Kbir which includes Wied iċ-Ċawsli, tal-Ħandaq, Għar Ħanzir, tal-Ingliża and Wied Qirda. Then we will cross over to tal-Ħlas Chapel and to Wied is-Sewda.

Meeting point: near Lidl, next to Marsa Park and Ride

Meeting time: 09:00

Duration: around 3 hours

Rating: Easy to moderate
