January

Wednesday 2nd: Siggiewi and its surrounding valleys

Duration: about 3 hrs
Rating: Easy
Meeting place: Limestone Heritage on the Siggiewi bypass.

Sunday 6th: A walk in the lovely countryside around Mgarr with spectacular sea views

Sunday 13th: Marsaskala towards Marsaxlokk and back

An easy walk between the two traditional fishing villages with lovely sea and panoramic views.

The Ramblers Association is organising this walk in support of the individual effort of two friends of three Ramblers who will be walking around the whole coastline of Malta to raise awareness and funds for Puttinu Cares. The Ramblers will meet up with the two friends en route, greet them for their efforts and accompany them as far as Marsaskala in support.

Wednesday 16th: Zebbug – Knisja ta’ San Blas – Siggiewi – Zebbug

An easy walk just to get used to walking again after the festive season. From Zebbug, we walk through the countryside towards the Knisja ta’ San Blas. After a short stretch uphill, we meander along the country lanes passing below Laferla cross towards Wied Hesri, Ta’ Bordin Ridge and Wied Baqqija back to Zebbug

Rating: Easy with some inclines and stairs

Saturday 19th: Gozo

From Marsalforn to Zebbug and on to Ghasri, finishing at Victoria, mainly via rural paths and tranquil country roads.

Duration:
about 3 hrs
Rating: Moderate
Meeting place and start time: We will take Bus 322 from Mgarr Ferry terminal at 08:55 to Marsalforn from where we will immediately start our walk.

Please note that this is a Saturday walk. Remember to bring along your bus card.


Sunday 27th: Rambling in Had-Dingli Countryside

From our meeting point we head towards the San Pawl tal-Pitkali area of Ħad-Dingli and on to Dingli Cliffs. At the western edge of the cliffs we go down a longish, steep country lane to Miġra l-Ferħa area. We stop for a break at a beautiful spot called Ras id-Dawwara, after which we continue walking on the cliffs along the coast, to the Miġra car park for another rest, before we start our way uphill. We return via Mtagħleb.

Wednesday 30th: Mellieha North West

From the centre of Mellieha, we go in a NW direction and descend to Gnien Ingraw Valley and go towards ic Cumnija via the rocky stretch where the British had an HAA emplacement.

February

Sunday 3rd: Two Valleys Walk

From the top of T’Alla u Ommu (5 mins walk downhill from San Pawl tat-Targa Chapel, Naxxar), we follow the country lanes to the Bird Park, cross over to Burmarrad, past the Roman Olive Oil Press to Bidnija and back to the starting point through country lanes.

Duration: about 3 hrs
Rating: Easy to Moderate

Sunday 10th: The Southern tip of Malta

We will be walking along the coast mainly from Marsaskala to St. Peter’s Pool and back along country lanes.

Duration: 3 to 4 hrs
Rating: Hard with some rough terrain and along cliff top

Wednesday 13th: San Gwann / Swieqi / Wied Ghomor

From San Gwann centre, we head towards the prehistoric cart ruts within the same village, passing by the ancient chapel of Santa Magdalena from where we then proceed to Wied Ghomor, then on to the fairly new village of Swieqi and on to San Giljan. We then wind our way back to our starting point.

Duration: about 3 hrs

Sunday 17th: Xemxija / Mizieb / Majjistral Park

Walking through the wooded area of Mizieb to reach Manikata and the coastal path. Here the terrain is somewhat rough.

Duration: 3 to 4 hrs
Rating: Moderate with some steep inclines and rough terrain
Meeting Place: Xemxija Bay, by the Kiosk/Veggie van (Pwales Bay)

Saturday 23rd: Zabbar

This will be a cultural and historical walk through Zabbar. We will be going through Biccieni and Misrah, finishing off with a guided visit to the Sanctuary Museum. An opportunity not to be missed!

Duration: The walk itself will take about 2 hrs, with another hour for the Museum visit.
Rating: Easy
Meeting Place: Mediatrix Square (Zabbar) which is just in front of the Museum.

Wednesday 27th: Siggiewi to Gebel Ciantar and back

A circular walk starting from Siggiewi Centre and going towards l-Gholja task Saliba and then on to the high Ridge overlooking Fawwara towards Gebel Ciantar.

Duration: about 3 to 4 hrs
Rating: Easy to Moderate (with a longish hill climb and some rough terrain)

March

Sunday 3rd: Manoel Island / Valletta + ferry boat (Cultural)

This is a repeat of the walk that had to be cut short due to the heavy rain in the last season.

After walking around Manoel Island, we follow the water’s edge, through the Pinetum, visiting Sa Maison gardens and Hastings gardens in our way to catch the ferry back.

Sunday 10th: Selmun Palace – Mistra Bay – St Paul’s islands – Mgiebah Bay

From Selmun Palace, we head down a steep incline to Mistra Bay. From there, we continue past Mistra Battery, then St Paul’s Islands, up towards Fort Campbell, turn right down another steep incline and on to Mgiebah Bay, past some old farmhouses and back to Selmun Palace.

Rating: Moderate to Hard with steep inclines and rough terrain

Wednesday 13th: A walk in the countryside around Mosta

Starting from San Guzepp tat-Targa (next to Mcast) Mosta, we will be walking along the Victoria Lines to Dwejra, on to the Chadwick Lakes (Wied il-Qlejja), through Wied l-Isperanza, back to from where we had started off.

Duration: from 3 to 4 hrs
Rating: Moderate to Hard

Sunday 17th: Gozo

We start walking from Mġarr quay to Għajnsielem and Pjazza tad-Dehra, Apparition Square, where we have the Għajn tal-Ħasselin, and the Apparition Monument. Further up the road we leave the village and walk up a steep path to the Nadur Belvedere and Kenuna Tower built by the British in 1848 as one of three semaphore towers; it was restored in 2005 and now houses modern comunications equipment and antennas. We head towards the Tad-Duru area and down into the valley and up the other side to reach the Tan-Nazzarenu (church dedicated to Jesus of Nazarath) side of Xagħra. Through the village centre and to the other side of Xagħra where we find the second major church which is dedicated to San Anton Abbati. Soon after we reach the old Xagħra Plague Hospital from where we can see Rabat and the Ċittadella. We proceed down a steep country road to the main Malsalforn road, but we turn into a country lane that goes behind the famous Christ statue on Salvatur Hill, and reach il-Qbajjar. From here we walk up the hill to Żebbuġ and the walk will end either here, Għasri or Ta’ Pinu, depending on the time.

Walkers can choose to leave the walk at various points on the route.

Duration: from 4 to 5 hrs
Rating: Moderate but longish with 3 uphills which may be difficult for some.

Sunday 24th: Wardija Ridge and Wied Qanotta

Starting from Burmarrad, we will be walking towards Wardija Ridge, climbing up from Wied Qanotta, enjoying spectacular views of the countryside along the way.

Duration: 3 to 4 hrs
Rating: Moderate but with some rough terrain
Meeting Place: Burmarrad (next to Scotts Supermarket)

Wednesday 27th: Smart City / Zonqor

Walking towads Zonqor along country lanes and tracks with some uneven ground, and coming back along the coast.

Duration: about 3 hrs
Rating: Moderate (some rough terrain)
Meeting point: Smart City (bottom car park)
Starting Time: 14:00


Sunday 31st: Victoria Lines (West) : Mgarr / Kuncizzjoni / Bingemma

A circular walk from Mgarr, following part of the Victoria Lines Trail. We will walk past Castello Zammitello and head through the hamlets of L-Iskorvit and Ta’ Abatija, till we reach the cliffs overlooking Fomm ir-Rih Bay, from where the Victoria Lines are clearly visible. We will then follow an uphill path leading to the Kuncizzjoni Battery from where we keep following the Victoria Lines through is-Santi, Bingemma fort, Nigret Tower, finally reaching Bingemma Gap. Then a walk through agricultural fields back to Mgarr.

Duration: about 4 hrs
Rating: Moderate to Hard (rough terrain and 1 steep incline)
