Sunday 1st October: Gozo

From Mgarr, we take the bus to Victoria Terminus, then another bus to a stop called Widerness, located the other side of the aqueduct arch, on the main Rabat-Għarb road. Then we start the walk proper by turning into a narrow country road and up a path in the fields to l-Għolja ta’ Għar Ilma, the source of the water that used to flow to Rabat through the said aqueduct Down the hill and Triq Għajn Abdul, and San Lawrenz, which we enter by a back path behind the Kempinski Hotel.

Triq Wied Merill leads to the top of Dwejra and the Inland Sea; beautiful views including Il-Ġebla tal-Ġeneral, Fungus Rock. We proceed along the cliff paths to Ponta San Dimitri, the westernmost tip of our Islands, until we eventually reach the fabled chapel of San Dimitri itself, which is indeed a peacful spot where we can sit and enjoy a bite and a drink.

We head towards the cliffs again, to arrive at Wied il-Mielaħ from the west. Here we have an azure window little known until the recent collapse of the iconic Dwejra Window. Now we walk along the country road towards Għarb (Arabic for West) but turn left along a path facing l-Għolja tal-Ġiordan. We reach Għammar and Ta’ Pinu for a bus back to Rabat.

Duration: Approximately 4 to 5 hours
Rating: Moderate but might be too long for some ramblers!
Meeting Place: Take the 8:15 ferry from Cirkewwa. Then bus 301 from Mgarr to Victoria bus terminus. Then another short bus ride to the start of the walk.
Time: Be early enough to catch the 8:15 ferry from Cirkewwa.


Sunday 8th October: Mgarr surrounding countryside

A walk in the lovely countryside around Mgarr.

Duration: Approximately 3 to 4 hours
Rating: Moderate with some rough ground – garigue.

Wednesday 11th October: North East Coast

A walk that will also take in the Campbell outpost, Ghajn Hadid highland, Selmun Palace, the Mgiebah, Ix-Xaghra tal-Girdellu, with all the views they offer. We will return below the cliff of Kortin, then through Santa Marija Estate back to the starting point.

Duration: Approximately 3 ½ hours
Rating: Moderate with uneven ground

Sunday 15th October: Annual walk through the British Garrison of Mtarfa and a visit to the Olive Press

For the fourth year running, we shall be visiting some interesting places in the past British Garrison of Mtarfa. From there, we eventually head to the “tal-Kancillier” Olive Press where we can watch olives being pressed and olive oil being bottled. One may also purchase first-class olive oil from this establishment.

Sunday 22nd October: A Walk to the South of Malta

From Birzebbugia, we will go towards Ghar Hasan, down to Wied Moqbol and back up again to higher ground and on to Hal-Far, eventually making our way back to Birzebbugia.

Duration: Approximately 4 hrs
Rating: Moderate to Hard

Saturday 28th October: Gozo

A walk on the Eastern side of Gozo. We will walk from the ferry at Mgarr towards Qala, then on to Nadur – as far as possible through countryside lanes and paths. This will be a circular walk where we will reach the ferry again about 4 hours later.

Duration: 4 to 5 hours
Rating: Moderate
Meeting Place and time: Take the 09:00 ferry from Cirkewwa. The walk starts from the Mgarr Terminus at 09:30

N.B. This is a Saturday walk!

Sunday 5th November: The Majjistral Park

We will be walking in the park enjoying both coastal and inland paths. Mostly an easy walk but there will be some rough terrain

Duration: 3 to 4hrs
Rating: Easy to Moderate due to some rough terrain

Sunday 12th November: Mellieha – Wied Ingraw

A pleasant walk in the countryside around Mellieha and Wied Ingraw.

Duration: About 3 hours
Rating: Moderate with some hills and valley crossings

Wednesday 15th November: Balluta / San Gwann / Mensija / Ta’ Giorni / St.Julians (Cultural)

A circular walk through a busy area of Malta with however interesting places to discover.

Duration: About 3 hours
Rating: Easy

Sunday 19th November: St. Thomas Bay/Tas-Slig, Marsaxlokk

Coastal walk with breath-taking views, sometimes walking close to the cliff edge and returning through country paths

Duration: 3 to 4 hrs
Rating: Moderate with some rough ground (good head for heights needed)
Meeting Place: St Thomas Bay car park, Marsascala

Sunday 26th November: Birzebbugia and its Natural Valleys

We pass through the picturesque Zembaq Valley, passing through country lanes and Qoton Valley. Later we head on to Has-Saptan, an afforested area mainly consisting of olive trees and a few carob trees and further on stop to see Loretu Chapel. At the end of our walk we can admire the Roman Remains and Casa Ipolito.

Duration: 3 to 4 hrs
Rating: Moderate to hard (uneven terrain)
Meeting Place: Boat Park/Car Park in Birzebbugia, near the toilets. Right across the main road from Al Fresco restaurant.

Sunday 3rd December: Dwejra Lines – Bidnija – Mgarr

A scenic walk taking us up to Dwejra Lines, past Falka Pumping Station, through the valley to Bidnija, Zebbieh and back to Mgarr.

Duration: 3 to 4 hours
Rating: Moderate with some steep inclines and rough terrain

Sunday 10th December: Marsascala / San Antnin Park / Bidni

A pleasant walk along the coast then lanes to reach San Antnin Park, returning through the hamlet of Bidni.

Duration: 3 to 4 hrs

Wednesday 13th December (Public Holiday): L-Aħrax tal-Mellieħa (Coastal and Country / Scenic)

Starting from the Mellieħa Bay Hotel, we shall walk down the majestic cliffs of l-Aħrax tal-Mellieħa, until we reach Little Armier Bay. The coastal walk will then turn into a country walk as we cross across l-Aħrax itself back to our starting point. Amongst other sights we shall have the opportunity to see various coves and inlets such as the one at Ta’ L-Imgħarrqa, Marks and Dukes Window and the Coral Lagoon. We shall also make stops at the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception and at the Aħrax Tower.

Sunday 17th December: High Ridge Walk

From St. James the Apostle Chapel, we cross the village of Naxxar through narrow and winding streets to the outskirts of Gharghur, past its semaphore tower and onwards to Top of the World, to Lutrika, Busietta and Madliena and back through country lanes, past rehabilitated old Globigerina Limestone quarries and back to our cars.

Sunday 24th December: Naxxar, Ghallis, Maghtab, Targa Gap.

From San Pawl tat-Targa Chapel, we go towards the valley, past cart-ruts and a renovated pill box close by a hardstone quarry. Following country lanes we reach Ghallis, follow the coast line and back to Naxxar from San Pawl tat-Targa Gap.

Duration: about 3 hours
Rating: Easy to Moderate
Meeting Place: San Pawl tat-Targa Chapel (Bus 260 every hour)
Time: 09:00 (back by noon)


Sun 31st December: Pembroke and its recent history (in aid of Malta Community Chest Fund)

This is a charity walk in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund. It is an easy and interesting walk to collect funds to a worthwhile cause.
Please do come along and bring as many friends as possible. Monetary contributions will be appreciated. See you all there.

We will be holding our annual Christmas-time Ramblers’ weekend on the 8th – 9th – 10th December this year. Please keep that weekend free. Further details will be sent closer to the date.
