Autumn Walks Calendar

October

Sunday 6th October: Cultural walk through the British Garrison town of Mtarfa ending with a visit to an olive press.

An easy walk starting at the Mdina Gate from where we head towards Mtarfa where we will pass through the old garrison town with its military buildings and pass close to a very old chapel overlooking the Chadwick Lakes. On leaving Mtarfa, we then head to Tal- Kanċillier olive press where we can watch olive oil being processed. There will be olive oil for sale for those who wish to purchase some.

Duration: 2.5hrs approx.

Wednesday 9th October: One last session of Water-Walking

We meet at Għadira Bay (Mellieħa), meeting on the left-hand side of the bay (when facing the sea) at the parking place close to the toilets. We shall be walking in waist to chest-high water.

Remember to bring sea shoes or similar footwear for your own safety.

Sunday 13th October: Chinese Garden in Santa Luċija and on to Gudja

We will be visiting the Chinese gardens and walking to the quaint village of Gudja using country pathways.

Duration: 3 hrs approx.

Sunday 20th October: Dingli / Mtaħleb

From our starting point, we will walk towards the Mtaħleb area and return to our starting point via a different route. Some of the walk is along well-trodden footpaths and roads. But some places are off the beaten track, and will require some clambering on difficult terrain, including loose stones and boulders. If you cannot handle this sort of terrain, then it would be better to give this walk a miss!

Duration: 3 hrs approx.

Rating: Hard to Very Hard, (see reasons above). Please heed the warning!

Wednesday 23rd October: Mġarr countryside

A pleasant ramble in the countryside around Mġarr.

Duration: 3 hrs approx.

Rating: Easy to Moderate

Sunday 27th October: Walk and visit to a bee-keeping centre

We shall be meeting at 8:30 and we will make our way to the beekeeping centre where we will split up into 2 groups: one group will continue on an hour and a half (approx.) walk, and the other will visit the beekeeping area. Then we will swap. It would be appreciated if we could each give a 1 euro donation that will go towards helping the beekeeper’s initiative.

November

Saturday 2nd November: A cultural walk along the streets of Żebbug Malta

A cultural walk around the old streets of Żebbug, Malta, visiting St. Rocco Church, Ħal Mula and Tad-Dawl Chapel, while admiring fine old houses along the route.

Duration: 2.5hrs approx.

Rating: Easy

Wednesday 6th November: Smart City / Żonqor

Walking towards Żonqor along country lanes and tracks with some uneven ground, and coming back along the coast.

Duration: 3hrs approx.

Rating: Moderate with some rough ground

Meeting Place: Smart City (bottom car park)

Sunday 10th November: Mellieħa / Mġiebaħ (Coastal and country)

From our starting point, we walk towards il-Kortin to Mġiebaħ, then along the coast towards Mġiebaħ Bay. From there, we walk up towards Selmun Palace. Before we get to Selmun Palace, we take a right turn back to Mġiebaħ past some old beehives, then towards il-Kortin to our starting point.

Duration: 3 hrs approx.

Rating: Moderate to Hard with rough terrain and some sharp inclines.

Sunday 17th November: Burmarrad / Wardija / Bidnija

From the starting point, we turn left and walk along the valley, climbing up to pass a Chapel, and then on to Wardija Battery. Beautiful view of St Paul’s Islands and surroundings. Then we go down a path across the fields, before climbing up again to a hill leading to the outskirts of Bidnija. We return to the starting point along a different trail. Lovely views of Qawra, Salini and Għajn Riħana.

Duration: 3 to 4 hrs.

Rating: Moderate with some sharp inclines

Wednesday 20th November: 6 Chapels Walk

From the ex-Trade Fair Grounds, Naxxar (Election counting Halls), we head towards several chapels on our way to Mosta Valley, where we will visit the last two chapels on our itinerary. We then head back to the starting point.

Duration: 3 hrs approx.

Rating: Moderate

Sunday 24th November: A Walk in the South of the Island

From the Parish Church in Marsaskala, we walk towards St. Thomas Bay and then on to Xrobb l-Għaġin and back along different country lanes.

Duration: 3 to 4 hrs.

Rating: Moderate

December

Sunday 1st December: Cultural walk in Qrendi

The Mayor of Qrendi, Mr. David Schembri has kindly offered to guide us round his quaint village, visiting il-Ġnien tal-Kmand, il-Maqluba and more. Tal-Ħniena Chapel and Crypt will be opened for us (we are proposing a voluntary donation of 2 euros). Afterwards, we will walk down to Ħagar Qim.

Duration: 4 hrs. approx.

Rating: Easy to Moderate

Wednesday 4th December: Lunzjata and Wied Hazrun

From St. Dominic Priory in Rabat, we head towards Lunzjata Valley, cross over to Wied Ħazrun and on to Dingli Cliffs from where we return past Villa Psaigon.

Duration: 3 hrs. approx.

Rating: Moderate

Sunday 8th December: Xemxija / Mistra Valley

Starting from Xemxija, we will walk through Mistra Valley, along the coast with views of St. Paul’s Island, then climbing up to Selmun Palace. (The terrain could be slippery if wet!)

Duration: 3 to 4 hrs.

Rating: Moderate with rough terrain and steep inclines

Meeting Place: Xemxija Bay, next to the veggie van and drinks kiosk.

Sunday 15th December: Siġġiewi countryside

We will be walking along the lovely trails and lanes in the countryside around the Siġġiewi village.

Duration: 3 to 4 hrs.

Rating: Moderate

Meeting Place: Limestone Heritage (on the Siġġiewi by-pass)

Wednesday 18th December: Balluta Bay / St Julians / Pembroke

A fairly easy walk through Balluta and Pembroke and back to our starting point, taking in some interesting features along the way.

Duration: 2.5 hrs. approx.

Rating: Easy

Sunday 22nd December: L-Aħrax tal-Mellieħa (Coastal and Countryside)

Starting from the Mellieħa Bay Hotel, we shall walk down to the majestic cliffs of L-Aħrax tal-Mellieħa, till we reach Little Armier Bay. The coastal walk will then turn into a country walk as we cross l-Aħrax itself back to our starting point. Amongst other sights, we shall have the opportunity to see various coves and inlets such as the one at Tal-Imgħarraq, Marks and Dukes Window and the Coral Lagoon. We shall also pass by the Chapel of the Conception and the Aħrax tower.

Sunday 29th December: Round Valletta’s perimeter

An interesting walk around the bastions of our Capital, Valletta.

Duration: between 2 to 3 hrs.
